Friday, August 4 at 7 PM "What it Means to be Human"
Milhaud: Le Boeuf sur le toit (“The Cow on the Roof”)
Tchaikovsky: Serenade for Strings
Intermission
Beethoven: Symphony No. 3, “Eroica”
In a quest to understand life, spirited Brazilian popular music suffuses The Cow on the Roof, showing a topsy-turvy world in music originally written for a Charlie Chaplin film. Tchaikovsky’s anguished soul rests for a moment in the tender and darkly earthy Serenade, which he “wrote from inner compulsion” calling it “a piece from the heart.” The concert finishes with the most heart-rending cry to heaven in Beethoven’s Eroica, the masterpiece symphony which challenges fate and celebrates what it means to be human; embracing life and living heroically.
